How to Begin Meditating

Create a Sacred Space

Clean, quiet, calming, light some candles, sit in total silence or play some soft music

Position Yourself

Sit in a comfortable position. I usually sit on a fluffy soft rug, with my bum on a pillow so my hips are higher than my knees and cross my legs.  Hands can be on your knees, thighs or together in your lap.  Palms can face up or down.  If you face your palms up on your lap, you are open to receive whatever comes to you, if you place them down, you may feel more grounded.  You can connect your thumb to one of your fingers which symbolizes many different things (Contact me for details).  If you do this, notice the energy you feel between your fingers.  If you are feeling physical pain in a seated position, connect your pinkie and thumb together and press firmly.

The Practice

There are so many different ways to meditate. This is one way.

Once you are settled, try not to move.  Breathe through your nose.  Be the observer, like you are watching a movie.  Watch your breath by focusing on the space right below your nose and above your upper lip.  If your mind starts to wander, come back to your breath, the present moment and the focus area (the space between your nose and your lip).  As the thoughts start to come in, watch them like you are watching a movie and try not to get attached to them.  Come back to your breath again and again and feel your air come in and out of your nose.  See what comes up for you, make this about you and know that whatever comes up, whatever you feel or experience, it is all ok, it's all good, you are exactly where you are supposed to be.  If you feel discomfort try not to move, if you feel pain send a few breaths to the area of pain and then come back to your focus area.  If the pain is a above a 4 on a pain scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the worst) after sending some breaths to the area, reposition your body staying present to your breath while you are moving.

Length of time

If this is extremely hard for you begin with 5 or 10 minutes.  Your goal should be at least 30 minutes to get the full benefits of meditation but even 5 minutes is better than 0.
